Letter: Traffic burden must be fixed first

In an Aug. 1 letter, “Pursue affordable housing,” Ceci Ryan Smith seemed not to be concerned about the additional traffic another apartment complex would bring to an already overburdened traffic area. Shopping and housing growth between 172nd and 192nd avenues during the past five or six years has greatly increased the traffic flow on Southeast First Street. The traffic controls on 162nd Avenue and First Street and those on Mill Plain Boulevard and 164th Avenue appear to have been designed by three monkeys dancing on a keyboard and approved by a politician who drives a government vehicle so he doesn’t have to worry about gas prices. The condition of both intersections is getting so bad you could almost lose a Smart Car or bust an axle in the grooves and pot holes.

So, if we are to get another apartment complex in that area, there really needs to be an examination of the traffic conditions before adding another 100 to 150 families to an already overburdened area.
