A mother and her two children were displaced by a fire that damaged their home in Camas on Thursday afternoon.

A one-story house at 203 N.W. 22nd Ave. was reported to be on fire at 1:20 p.m. A woman had returned home with her son and discovered the couch in the family room was on fire and called 911, according to Camas-Washougal Fire Department Chief Nick Swinhart.

They both got out of the house by the time firefighters arrived.

Arriving firefighters saw flames shooting out of the back of the house, Swinhart said. The fire had blown out all of the windows. Firefighters ran hose lines through the house and quickly knocked down the fire, though it had already caused extensive smoke and fire damage.

“The back is just destroyed,” Swinhart said.

An initial investigation by Deputy Fire Marshal Randy Miller indicates that the fire likely started in the family room; he’s focusing on possible electrical or heat sources that could have sparked the fire, but the cause has not yet been determined.

The agency doesn’t believe a Christmas tree or Christmas lights are to blame.

“It’s going to be a long time before that house is going to be able to be occupied again,” Swinhart said. “There’s a lot of overhaul they’ll have to do,”

Clark County property records lists the house as a four-bedroom ranch-style house built in 1970. The three people living in the house will stay with family.
