Boys basketball: Washougal 74, Capital 67

Washougal rallied from a first-half deficit to beat Capital of Olympia and stay alive for a Class 2A regional berth with a win in a loser-out game in the 2A district tournament in Longview.

Washougal will face 2A Greater St. Helens League rival Hockinson at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen High School for the district’s final berth to the 2A regionals.

Capital led 25-15 in the second quarter before the Panthers closed that half with a run that was capped by a three-quarter length 3-pointer from Sean Guthrie.

Washougal came out strong in the third quarter to take 48-41 lead on Jaden Jantzer’s 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the period.

A technical foul on Capital in the fourth quarter led to a key five-point swing for the Panthers, allowing them to seal the victory.

Aaron Deister had 16 points and nine rebounds for Washougal. Nate Adams had 18 points and five rebounds, and Michael McElroy added 10 points four rebounds and six assists.

Austin Tran made 8 of 10 free throws and overcame illness to play a strong defensive game.
