IPFW beats IUPUI 80-79 in overtime

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Frank Gaines scored 29 points, including two free throws with 3 seconds to play in overtime, and IPFW defeated IUPUI 80-79 Saturday night.

The Mastodons (10-13, 3-6 Summit) made 12 of 19 3-pointers, or 63 percent, to help offset IUPUI’s 63 percent overall accuracy from the field. Gaines was 6 of 9 from 3-point range.

Luis Jacobo had 13 points, including three 3s, for IPFW. Joe Edwards scored 12 points and Michael Kibiloski scored 10.

Mitchell Patton scored 25 points to lead IUPUI, including the last four points of regulation to tie the game at 65. Donovan Gibbs had 17 points and Greg Rice scored 16.

The Jaguars (6-18, 1-9) have lost eight in a row, including Thursday’s 89-71 defeat at Oakland when the Golden Grizzlies’ Travis Bader scored a NCAA season-high 47 points.

IUPUI’s last win was over IPFW on Dec. 27 in Indianapolis.
