Complete I-5 closure begins tonight

A 54-hour closure on both directions of Interstate 5 in Salmon Creek is scheduled to begin tonight at 11 p.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The shut-down will send tens of thousands of vehicles onto other nearby freeways and local streets, likely causing extra congestion in the Vancouver area this weekend. The closure will allow construction crews to set 12 concrete girders over I-5 as part of the Salmon Creek Interchange Project, remaking the northern convergence of I-5 and Interstate 205.

Northbound I-5 will be closed between state Highway 500 and I-205. Southbound I-5 will be closed from I-205 to Northeast 134th Street. The closure begins at 11 p.m. tonight, and is scheduled to end at 5 a.m. Monday, according to WSDOT.

The girders will form the backbone of a new bridge carrying Northeast 139th Street over the freeways. Preparations for the heavy lifting this weekend are already under way.
