Tyler Shadix and Nathaniel Cheney scored second-half goals to lift Union to a 2-0 victory over A.C. Davis of Yakima in a first-round game in the 4A state tournament at Yakima.

“We’ve been knocking on the door to get a first-round win at state, and it feels great to finally make good on that opportunity,” Union coach Kelcey Burris said.

Union will host Ferris of Spokane in a quarterfinal match Saturday at McKenzie Stadium.

Hazen 3, Mountain View 2 — Missed opportunities doomed the Thunder in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs. Fabian Celestin scored in the first half for Mountain View, and Marshall Hartley converted a penalty kick for the equalizer in the middle of the second half, but Hazen found the net again with about seven minutes remaining.

Woodland wins two –– Woodland beat Rochester 7-1 and Hoquiam 10-0 to clinch a berth to the 1A state tournament. The Beavers will play Montesano on Saturday for the district championship in Centralia.

La Center still alive — Kayla Aguirre’s three-run home run in the top of the first inning sparked her team’s response to a 16-0 loss to Montesano as the Wildcats defeated Toledo/Winlock 12-8. The Warhawks led 4-3 after an inning, but La Center responded with a four-run second to take the lead for good.

Emily Muffett, who took the loss against Montesano, pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for the win, and was also 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Aguirre was 2 for 4 with four RBI.

La Center will play Hoquiam in a loser-out game at 11 a.m. Saturday.
