Firefighters from the Vancouver Fire Department and Clark County Fire District 6 raised more than $15,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in the annual Fill the Boot.

For a total of eight hours over Sept. 26-27, firefighters collected donations at the intersection of Northeast 78th Street and Highway 99.

Vancouver Firefighter John Stewart, who coordinated the event, said the effort raised $15,901, besting the 2012 total by more than $500.

“We were able to collect approximately $33 a minute on average for the MDA,” Stewart said. “This would not be possible without the firefighters from Local 452 and Local 1805 volunteering their time, and the generosity of the citizens of Clark County or anybody else passing through who put money in the boot.”

The nationwide event originated in Boston in 1954, and local firefighters have been participating for more than three decades.
