Letter: High deductible leads to debt

My wife and I live on a small income, enough to pay our bills but little else. With this in mind, we applied for health insurance through Obamacare and acquired a bronze policy. A tax credit of $498 per month for the premium is paid directly to the insurer.

Recently, my wife had to see our family doctor. When we got the statement, the charges were in excess of $300, of which the insurance covered only $32.18. That is when we discovered there was a $6,000 deductible that we had to meet before the policy would pay for much of anything. If this isn’t a joke I don’t know what is.

Obamacare is paying $498 per month to an insurer who is sitting back and getting rich off people caught up in this fiasco. Why not deposit $498 per month to an account earmarked for medical expenses only? That way when our doctor bills are acquired those finances can be used for those bills and avoid debts that simply cannot be afforded. As it stands, all that Obamacare is doing is giving the proverbial shaft to the people who need the help the most.

Thank God that Barack Obama cannot run for another term but it might be already too late. I don’t know if this country will survive the legacy that he is going to leave behind.
