Boys basketball: Camas doesn’t pass up win over Stanwood

CAMAS — Here, you score.

No, I insist, you take the shot.

You sure?

Yep, go ahead.

The Camas Papermakers were so nice to each other Monday night, giving each other assist after assist in a 74-53 non-league boys basketball victory over Stanwood.

Jordan Anderson scored a team-high 15 points, Trevor Jasinsky added 14, and 12 Papermakers in all found the scoring column.

Camas made 30 of 56 shots and had 21 assists on those field goals.

“We’re trying to pass up the good shot and trying to get the great shots,” Anderson said. “We’re trying to move the ball and trying to be patient. We’re making the defense work.”

The strategy worked from the start.

Jasinsky found James Price for a lay-up for the first score of the game. Next trip down the court, Price passed up a decent look to pass the ball to Jasinsky for an easier lay-up.

It was contagious, too. Those 21 assists? Those came from 10 players.

Making Camas coach Skyler Gillespie smile was another statistic: The Papermakers finished with 10 turnovers, only five through the first three quarters that won this game.

All that passing, and hardly a bad pass in the bunch.

Camas (6-3) led 21-15 after the first quarter — Price started 3 for 3 from the floor with two assists, and two blocked shots — and then Anderson got hot in the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers, giving Camas a 40-27 lead at the break.

“It’s great when you’re finally hitting your shots,” Anderson said. “Once you hit a couple, you have a bunch of confidence and your teammates start looking for you more.

“Whoever’s hot, we’re usually feeding them.”

Price and Ethan Unger finished with eight points apiece. Jake Hansel added six.

The Papermakers put this one away early in third quarter, opening the second half on a 15-2 run.

Carlton McDonald led Stanwood with 16 points. He made four 3-pointers. Karsten Chaplik added 15 points.

Stanwood is staying in the region and will play at Union on Tuesday.
