As the Columbia River Crossing was defeated for a second time, here are a few things that detracted from that bridge: light rail functionality in cold and hot weather, and the two people killed last year by the MAX train. On the other side of the issue, light rail is fast and efficient in getting people to their destinations and in passing traffic that’s at a standstill (on the freeway during rush hour). It’s going to take federal funding to deal with a new bridge, in addition to solving the traffic congestion problems on Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 in Washington and Oregon.
