Vancouver Public Schools’ Jump Start kindergarten program has been named one of 15 first-place Magna Award winners by the American School Board Journal, published by the National School Boards Association. The annual awards recognize best practices in school district leadership.

Jump Start, a free summer program, provides academic and developmental activities to equip incoming kindergartners with skills needed to begin learning on the first day of school.

In 2013, 600 students attended Jump Start programs in 14 district schools. A $75,000 contribution from the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools helped pay for the program.
