College notebook: McCartney honored for Sac State female performance of year

Gymnast first in school history to reach NCAA meet

Kalliah McCartney of Vancouver, the first Sacramento State gymnast in program history to advance to the NCAA Division I Championships, was honored for “Female Individual Performance of the Year” at the school’s “Green and Golden Globes Awards” last week.

A gradaute of CAM High School in Battle Ground, McCartney placed sixth in the all-around competition at the NCAA Seattle Regional to qualify for nationals.

The junior scored a season-high 39.275 in the all-around, which was the highest total by a Hornet in postseason history. She also set school postseason records on vault and bars after scoring 9.875 and 9.800, respectively.

The awards program is in its third year. McCartney and 18 other honorees were presented with their awards May 14 at the University Union Ballroom.

Men’s lacrosse

WOU’s Preston named 2nd Team All-America

Western Oregon University sophomore Tyler Preston was named a Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association second-team All-American face-off specialist.

Preston led the nation in faceoff wins, faceoffs taken and ground balls fielded. The Prairie High School graduate played high school lacrosse for King’s Way.

Western Oregon competed this month at the MCLA nationals after winning their division of the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League. The MCLA is the national organization for non-varsity college men’s lacrosse.

Golf

Vizcaino, Cavaliers eighth at nationals

Concordia University junior Josh Vizcaino helped the Cavaliers to an eighth-place finish in the first appearance at NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships.

An Evergreen High School graduate, Vizcaino shot 76-80-78–234 over the three rounds at LPGA International’s The Jones Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., placing 118th overall.

The event was cut from four rounds to three because of thunderstorms Thursday. Concordia, which was ranked No. 19 in the season’s final poll, totaled 18-over 882, 17 strokes behind team champion College of Coastal Georgia. Medalist honors went to Oklahoma City University’s James Marchesani, who finished at 5-under 211.

n Chico State’s Alistair Docherty, a Union High graduate, earned All-America honors by finishing tied for fifth in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Division II golf championships Wednesday in Allendale, Mich.

Docherty, a sophomore, shot a 73 on Wednesday to finish 4-over at 217 for 54 holes.

Chico State placed third in the stroke play portion of the championships and will face Lynn University of Florida in match play, which will begin Thursday.

Track and field

Academic All-GNAC teams announced

Four Clark County athletes were named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track & Field All-Academic team.

Men:

Joshua Reiter, Western Washington (Camas High School), junior, computer science major, 3.51 GPA.

Women:

Seanna Pitassi, Central Washington (Camas High School), senior, science education, 3.78 GPA.

Taylor VanValey, Northwest Nazarene (Hockinson High School), sophomore, social work, 3.30 GPA.

Mackenzie Smith, Western Washington (Prairie High School), sophomore, English, 3.37 GPA.
