White earns spot at U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships

Gabi White will represent Vancouver Lake Crew at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships after racing to a third-place finish at a regional competition on Vancouver Lake.

White placed third in the girls varsity single scull finals during the Pacific Northwest Regional Junior Championships, which took place May 16-18.

The top three finishers in each varsity race during the regionals qualifies to row at nationals, which will take place June 13-15 on Lake Natoma, near Rancho Cordova, Calif.

A junior at Columbia River High School, White was the only member of Vancouver Lake Crew to qualify for the national competition this season.

Vancouver Lake Crew had 23 rowers participate in the regionals, which brought 25 other clubs and about 1,350 rowers from the region to Vancouver. This is White’s second season with Vancouver Lake Crew. She made the jump from novice to varsity-level racing this season.

Vancouver Lake Crew boats placed in several events. Here are the top finishers for the club, which includes high school students from around Southwest Washington:

In the boys varsity single scull, Michael Hewitt placed fifth. In the boys varsity double scull, Tuck Wilcox and Hewitt rowed to sixth place. In the junior varsity boys single scull, Wilcox placed fourth.

In the boys lightweight single scull finals, Andrew Nevit placed third and Deryk Ahner sixth. Katie Hickey finished third in the girls lightweight single scull race.

In other junior varsity races, Alexis Winnett took third place in the girls single scull, and Tricia Patterson and Elizabeth Varberg took fourth in girls double scull.

Vancouver Lake Crew had five novice boats in final heats. The boys novice quad finished second. Nicholas John, Matthew Murphy, Pearce Fowler and Jacob Skimas were the rowers and Gabby McClure was the coxswain. The boys novice-4 boat took fourth place. Rowers were Nicholas John, Nick Bjergo, Fowler and Skimas and McClure was coxswain.

Gillian Selix and Brynn Landwehr rowed the VLC girls novice double scull to fourth place. In novice single scull racing, Mattew Murphy was fifth in the boys race and Sierra Colletto was fifth in the girls race.
