NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — The Coast Guard and Lincoln County authorities are searching for a 6-year-old boy after a woman reported that she threw a child off the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport on the Oregon coast.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Klingenberg says the Coast Guard dispatched two boats and a helicopter to search the water after getting a call for help about 6:30 p.m. Monday from Newport fire and police officials.

The woman’s 911 call reportedly came in about 6 p.m. Monday.

Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda says his detectives are interviewing the woman. So far, he says police haven’t been able to confirm her report.

He says police as well as the Coast Guard, the county marine patrol and county search and rescue teams are “putting out a good effort to see if we can find the child” if a child was actually thrown in the water.
