A tip-in by Jason Smarr in overtime lifted the Clark College men’s basketball team to a 76-75 win at Bellevue on Saturday to open the NWAC season.

Clark battled back after a sluggish first half where the Penguins made just 4 of 14 free throws and 1 of 7 three-pointers.

“It’s hard to win on the road when you shoot that way,” Clark coach Alex Kirk said.

Clark was down by six with two minutes to play, and managed to take a three point lead in the closing seconds before Bellevue tied it to send the game into overtime.

Evan Garrison led Clark with 21 points and seven assists, Riann Bassett had 11 points off the bench, and Bryan Berg also had 11 points.

Clark’s next game is at Chemeketa in Salem, Ore., on Tuesday.

WOMEN: Clark advanced to the final of the Yakima Valley Tip-Off Tournament with a 67-57 win over Whatcom.

Shantell Jackson scored 24 points, Taylor Howlett had 15 and Alexa Orcutt scored nine points to go with 10 rebounds.

Clark will face NWAC West Division foe Centralia for the title on Sunday.
