Letter: Let’s shake up the vote

The Columbian
Published: October 19, 2014, 5:00pm

I am tired of analysts, pundits, and the media expressing that people are at fault for our political debacle because we choose not to vote. As an independent, I vote in every election, but I only see Republicans and Democrats listed on the ballot and never a third party candidate. I am tired of the relentless vitriol coming from the Democrats and Republicans. I adamantly refuse to vote for another lawyer, businessman, millionaire or professional politician who doesn’t care about constituents; who merely votes in lockstep with his/her party.

So when I vote, my ballot is always a write-in candidate. Many call this a wasted vote, but I consider it a vote in protest of what our political system has become … dysfunctional. Our politicians lie and then say they misspoke or were taken out of context. When questioned by media, they never answer the questions, but simply spew their political rhetoric. They only work part-time and spend a majority of time raising monies for their next re-election.

Don’t blame voters for not coming out in districts that have been gerrymandered in win-win situations for these politicians. The system is broken, and the people need to fix it. Think term limits and campaign reform for starters.

It’s time to take back our government from the aristocracy, the permanent political class, and the talking heads.
