Weather Eye: Triple-digit heat put sizzling punctuation on very warm July

We almost made 100 degrees Saturday for three days in a row but topped out at 98. Could you feel the cool-down? Boy, 103 on Thursday and 101 on Friday. What a heat wave as our long, hot summer weather continues.

Today we will “cool” down to the low 90s — let’s say 95 degrees or so as the thermal trough of low pressure slides east of the Cascades. That will allow some cooler ocean air to filter inland. Monday through Wednesday we could see some morning low clouds venture up the Columbia into Clark County.

We’ll also see thunder clouds or what’s left of them drifting off the Cascades or moving northward through the Willamette Valley. Monsoonal moisture over Nevada will move northward and kick off scattered thunderstorms over and east of the mountains and also in southern Oregon.

There has been lots of rain over southern California, Nevada and Arizona, which usually happens this time of the year. With the flow of air circulating around the hot ridge of high pressure we will see some of the clouds, humidity and maybe lightning. Raindrops, please!

Puget Sound was included in this heat wave — not 100 degrees, but several days in the 90s. Eastern Washington high temperatures were between 100 and 110 degrees.

July is going down in the record books as a warm month. Many cities will post it as the warmest July on record. Portland places it at No. 2.

Wildfires are burning in Washington and Oregon, keeping firefighters busy. Smoke has filtered the sunshine in some cities, and we may see some of that today.

Keep cool and be happy. This will be a summer to remember.
