Battle Ground fire caused by failure of air compressor

A fire in a Battle Ground garage that displaced four residents and killed three dogs was caused by a failure in an air compressor, according to fire investigators.

The fire was first reported as an explosion in the garage, at 2304 S.W. Sixth St., at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Crews quickly stopped the blaze from spreading to the rest of the house.

A 1989 Volkswagen Jetta that was being restored was destroyed in the fire, and an other vehicle also was damaged. The total estimated damage from the fire, which includes contents and structure damage, was about $150,000, Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Curtis Eavenson said.

The residents got out of the house before firefighters arrived, but the family lost three dogs in the blaze. A fourth dog was reported missing.

Clark County Fire & Rescue Spokesman Tim Dawdy said that fire crews used pet resuscitation equipment and fought aggressively to save the three dogs found inside the house, but the pets died.
