A would-be masked bandit attempted to steal one of The Salvation Army’s ubiquitous red kettles from an east Vancouver Safeway store Thursday afternoon, but was unsuccessful.

The incident was reported at 3:15 p.m. at the supermarket at Northeast 162nd Avenue and Fourth Plain Road.

The bandit was described as a white man, wearing a mask, dark clothing and a baseball cap. He fled in a silver Honda Accord station wagon.

Police were unable to find the man or the car. Because he may attempt to steal another kettle, they are asking bell ringers and retailers who host the fundraiser to take extra precautions.

The red kettle campaign has been a mainstay of Salvation Army fundraising since 1891, when the first kettle, a converted crab pot, was placed on the San Francisco waterfront.

This is The Salvation Army’s 125th anniversary of serving Vancouver and Clark County.
