Weather Eye: Wet, possibly windy conditions will be with us for at least a week

Did you see those dark clouds moving in from the west Wednesday afternoon? It was beginning to look quite ominous by dark.

A deep low-pressure system was moving inland and will bring moderate to heavy rain from the coast to the Cascades with rain in the ski areas. More is on tap for Friday, Saturday and Monday.

Maybe if we are lucky, we’ll dry out the middle of next week, but at this rate, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Strong winds will blow along the coasts as these fronts move through, and it will be breezy here, as well. If the storms track just right, we may have some higher winds, so stay tuned. It will just be downright wet and windy the next five days.

Meanwhile, the Midwest and East Coast will keep winter in their midst, with lots of ice and snow to go around. Nothing even close to that in our near future. I don’t see any chance for significant snow in the mountains through the middle of the month.

Remember last year on this date? We went into a deep freeze with inches of snow. I had 14 to 16 inches of snow at one point in Salmon Creek.

Seems like so long, doesn’t it? The older I get the less I enjoy the cold weather but I would sacrifice to get some chilly rain and mountain snow. The snowpack on Mount Hood in Oregon will soon be gone at this rate. I heard it was around 12 percent of normal or so.

I will mention Northern California is expected to get some good rainfall, too. They need it desperately. Freezing levels will be way up there, too, and only some snow in the higher Sierras.
