First, I’m neither a “fool” as described in Paula Colley’s Jan. 9 letter, “Why can’t restrictions be enforced?” nor a “pyromaniac” as described in Carla Wehrmann’s Jan. 3 letter, “Organize bounty to aid in citations.” Research the current state law, and fireworks on New Year’s Eve was legal in some areas and will be legal again on Dec. 31, 2016.
I have been a responsible person all my life, complied with the laws and believe in celebrating the birth of our nation on July 4 and the end of a year. Those celebrations include the use of fireworks, because fireworks are a ceremonial display of the birth of our nation and the birth and prospects of a new year. “Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light …”
There are irresponsible fireworks users, just as there are irresponsible drivers, parents, children, etc.
Your constitutional right to seek happiness does not supersede my rights, although our country continues down a path where our rights are eroded by the few. The Clark County fireworks advisory vote in 2013, in reality, passed by only 21.8 percent of the registered voters when you consider only 37.2 percent of registered voters turned out.
I moved from the city to 8 acres to live out the rest of my life and plan on celebrating, legally, each and every Fourth of July and by law, legally again on Dec. 31, 2016.
