Camas puts an end to Skyview girls streak, 49-46

Last-second shot wins it for Papermakers

Camas post Nikki Corbett had the big game Friday night, Teague Schroeder had the big shot, and a really big win streak is now history.

Schroeder made a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left, giving Camas a 49-46 Class 4A Greater St. Helens League girls basketball victory over Skyview, ending the Storm’s 41-game league winning streak.

“Oh my God, it’s the biggest win ever,” said Corbett who had 27 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocked shots. “This is … oh my gosh, we’ve got people in there crying we are so happy. I can’t explain it. There is so much excitement. I’m speechless.”

Schroeder’s shot ended a fourth quarter that featured seven lead changes and three ties. Camas improved to 10-3 and 5-0 in the GSHL. Skyview fell to 9-4, 4-1 in league — the team’s first league loss since 2011.

“I thought we were going to go to overtime, but Teague is our buzzer-beating 3-point shooter,” Corbett said.

When the clock is going down, the Papermakers ask themselves this question:

“Where’s Teague? Get her the ball,” Corbett said.

Schroeder made a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer, too, but that was her only basket of the game until her final shot.

“As a shooter, confidence is the No. 1 thing,” Schroeder said. “I threw it up, and I said, ‘This has got to go in.’ “

It did.

Skyview did not call a timeout. The Storm got the ball to half court but did not get a shot off in time to try to tie.

“I’m extremely proud of our group,” Skyview coach Jennifer Buscher said. “Our kids flat-out played tonight. Every kid that played gave their best effort. As a coach, I don’t think we can ask any more than that.”

Genevieve Lo led Skyview with 13 points. Hannahjoy Adams added 11 to go with four steals and three assists.

Lo’s free throw with 43 seconds left tie the game at 46. Camas would miss two free throws on the other end, but the Storm turned the ball over with 32 seconds left. After a timeout, the Papermakers used most of the shot clock before Schroeder hit from the corner.

“I was having a rough game shooting,” Schroeder said. “All that really matters are the ones that really count. It doesn’t matter what shots you miss. Any shot I miss, I just have to let it go.”

Corbett, meanwhile, had her monster game despite playing against medical advice. Recovering from a right knee injury, she was advised to take a rest this game. No way, she said. Not against Skyview.

“I was honestly so nervous. I really just tried as hard as I could,” Corbett said. “The adrenaline was going through me, and I played pretty good, I guess.”

She scored eight points in the third quarter and nine more in the fourth. She finished the night 10 of 14 from the floor. She also ruled on defense, altering nearly as many shots as she blocked.

Corbett said she loved the intensity of that fourth quarter.

“It’s back and forth, up and down, up and down, and you’re nervous,” she said. “But you’re also ready to get the ball in your hands.”

The Papermakers made the most of their last opportunity with the ball — taking 27 seconds off the clock before Schroeder won the game.
