Neighbors and firefighters doused a fireworks-related fire that sparked Thursday afternoon in Vancouver’s Rose Village neighborhood.

An improvised firework started a fire in the grass at 3312 R St., which spread to the outside of the vacant house, said Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli. Neighbors spotted the fire, reported at 2:22 p.m., and attacked it with their garden hoses.

The Vancouver Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire, which could have been a lot worse if not for everyone’s quick actions, Scarpelli said. The fire caused an estimated $500 damage to the exterior of the house.

Modified fireworks are illegal and dangerous because they’re unpredictable, Scarpelli said.

Investigators did not find the person who lit the firework.
