Clark County sheriff’s deputies captured a wanted sex offender early Sunday morning after he allegedly triggered a silent alarm while trying to break into a Hazel Dell convenience store, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies were dispatched to Glenwood Grocery, 11811 N.E. 72nd Ave., after a silent alarm went off there at about 1:15 a.m. The first officer to arrive, Deputy Joe McLoughlin, saw a man trying to pry open the store’s back door, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The suspect allegedly ran south on 72nd Avenue.

The man was chased down by Deputy Brian Ellithorpe and his police dog, Saver, who forced the man to turn onto Northeast 70th Avenue, the sheriff’s office said.

They apprehended the suspect, Zachery James Michaelis, 24, of Vancouver, in a nearby wooded area, where he had attempted to hide, according to the news release.

The sheriff’s office said Michaelis had an outstanding felony warrant for failing to register as a sex offender.

After being treated for a minor dog bite at a hospital, Michaelis was booked into the Clark County Jail on his warrant, and on suspicion of first-degree and second-degree attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools, the sheriff’s office said.
