F.C. Salmon Creek celebrated a state title and a new family member on May 3.

Tina Ellertson’s girls under-14 Nemesis team won the state championship with a 2-1 win over a team from Pacific Northwest Soccer Club of Tukwila.

Hours later, Ellertson gave birth to a son, Mason.

Ava Benedetti scored the go-ahead goal with 10 minutes left as the Nemesis won the Virginia Mason Washington Youth Soccer Championship played at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

The championship win came after a 1-0 win over the Washington Rush in the May 2 semifinal match.

By winning Washington Youth Soccer’s most competitive tournament, the Nemesis will represent Washington at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals in June at Boise, Idaho.

In the state cup championship match, the Nemesis fell behind 1-0 before Benedetti was fouled inside the penalty area and Callie Rheaume converted a penalty kick. Benedetti then scored the winner when she beat a defender scored in a one-on-one chance against the goalkeeper.

In the semifinal win over the Rush, Brin Wolvert scored the goal with 25 minutes remaining by converting a rebound chance after the Rush keeper got a piece of a Benedetti shot.

Ellertson, a former women’s national team defender, did not attend the semifinal match.

Her father, Joe Frimpong, coached the team that day but Ellertson joined the team Saturday evening and was on hand for Sunday’s final match — hours before Mason Ellertson was born.

In addition to the regional championships, the Nemesis is scheduled to play in the National Premier League championship. The Nemesis won that national tournament in 2014.

Players for the 2014-15 Nemesis team of girls born in 2000 are Jenna Efraimson, Hallie Byzewski, Malaika Quigley, Ally Turkington, Bella Serrano, Sydney Weber, Maddie Goss, Savannah Harshbarger, Payton Lindell, Mackenzie Ellertson, Benedetti, Wolvert, Regan Smith, Rheaume, Madison Kemp, Alyssa Olson and Avery Fairbrother.

Along with Tina Ellertson and Joe Frimpong, the Nemesis coaching staff includes Desirae Hefley.

Presidents Cup

The Washington Timbers Green girls soccer team finished second in the Virginia Mason Washington Youth Soccer Presidents Cup tournament.

Playing in the girls under-17 division, the Timbers Green lost 1-0 to Rainier Valley Slammers on Sunday in the title match at Starfire Complex in Tukwila.

Despite losing in the championship match, Washington Timbers Green will play in the Region IV Presidents Cup tournament June 10-14 in Snohomish. This is the fifth year in a row this team has qualified for regional competition. The President’s Cup is the second most competitive level of youth soccer tournaments in Washington.

Timbers Green reached Sunday’s final match with a 5-1 win over Westsound FC Red in the semifinals on Saturday. Amanda Shi, Taylor Germer, Makyla Croco and Rylee MacDonald scored in the first half and Sarah Yang scored in the second half.

Players for the Timbers Green team of girls born in 1997 are: Emma Jiminez, Kalle Nguyen, Germer, Madison Smit, Meleah Kainu, Croco, Riley Gray, Erin Scott, Shi, Madison Veltkamp, Nicolle Ohama, Jillian Bolke, Liliana Delgadillo, Olivia Schmitz, Alyssa Mehan, Brooke Shirley, Yang and MacDonald.
