SPOKANE — Winning football and basketball teams are giving Eastern Washington University a statewide reputation.

A new survey found that athletics most often was cited when people were asked their impressions of the Cheney school.

The quality of educational offerings was mentioned by some Spokane County respondents. But The Spokesman-Review says most statewide respondents didn’t know enough about the school to form an overall opinion.

The $47,000 survey included three polls conducted in January and March. Five hundred randomly selected residents from across Washington were interviewed by phone; for comparison purposes, another 400 were interviewed in Spokane County.

Eastern has sought to position itself as the best value in Washington by offering the lowest tuition of any of the state’s public universities.
