Letter: Search for cause of deficiency

The Columbian
Published: May 22, 2015, 5:00pm

Neatly balanced, as usual, with a con from Phil McMichael’s May 16 letter “Schools don’t need more money,” segued into Kristin Peters’ letter “Challenging times for teachers” and a pro with Claudia M. Frahm’s letter “Teachers deserve more.”

One way to judge the value of the service or product is to compare costs vs. benefits. In this comparison, U.S. school systems are woefully deficient and getting worse by the year.

Next step, search for cause by evaluating the process. Any worker who is proud of his product or output is not fearful of being measured and evaluated, unless a public school teacher.

The U.S. education system is in free-fall from former days of excellence. Or in academia terminology, a grade F.

The May 15 Columbian has a great story “Legacy Salmon Creek worker’s service saluted,” spotlighting George Pobi, son of immigrants from Europe to Canada to the United States. Consider this telling gem of a sentence hidden within: “When Pobi was 12, the family moved to Riverside, Calif., where Pobi graduated from high school at age 16 — the result of skipping two grades after moving to the U.S.” Bravo Zulu, Semper Fi, George.

Is a seeing-eye dog needed for the self-designated education professionals to get a clue and a lead?
