EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Oregon is proposing to create its own health insurance plan for students.
The Register-Guard reports the plan would include the existing on-campus health care and a new network of off-campus doctors, counselors, urgent care and hospital services.
New and returning students would be automatically enrolled in the plan, dubbed UOCare, in the fall. But they would be able to opt out and buy a policy on the federal exchange or remain on a parent’s insurance.
University officials say the university plan would likely cost students less and offer unique services such as sports therapy or group therapy for eating disorders.
The school’s Board of Trustees must give the university permission at its June meeting to pursue the plan.
