City offers rebates for tree planting

VANCOUVER — Vancouver residential property owners who plant one to five approved trees on their lot are eligible for a 50 percent rebate of up to $50 per tree under the city’s Urban Forestry TreeFund Program.

Customers who switch from paper bills to the city utility’s eBilling program can get back as much as $100 on the cost of the first tree planted, according to a city press release.

Residential property owners in Vancouver can select a tree from a list at www.cityofvancouver.us/urbanforestry. Click on the “TreeFund” section. Buy the tree at a local nursery, plant it in your yard and save your receipt. Fill out a TreeFund application on the Urban Forestry website and mail it to the city’s Urban Forestry Program. Vancouver Urban Forestry staff will visit your site to verify that what you’ve planted meets program requirements. Refunds for eligible trees will follow by mail.

To plant a street tree — a tree in which the trunk is fully or partly located within the right of way, property owners must first apply for a street tree permit before buying the tree.

TreeFund is paid for by the city Tree Account, where donations, penalties and mitigation funds are deposited so trees can be planted throughout Vancouver. No general fund tax dollars are allocated toward the program.

For more information, go to www.cityofvancouver.us/urbanforestry or call 360-487-8308.
