Weather Eye: Rain will retreat today, but is expected to return for the weekend

Rain that moved inland Wednesday was about on schedule and generally on the lighter side of things, as expected. However, some areas of Clark County received a few heavier showers. As of 4 p.m., Vancouver had tallied a tenth of an inch of rain in all. I had .18 of an inch in Salmon Creek and the foothills had a third to one-half-inch of rain. Coastal regions including the Coast Range mountains, had nearly an inch of rain, generally about three quarters of an inch.

Today, we will see warm and humid conditions with no rain, but things are brewing out in the Pacific. Remnants of Hurricane Oho will move northward from the southern Pacific and head toward the British Columbia coastline, centering in on Haida Gwaii. Strong storm and gale-force winds will pound the coast of British Columbia on Friday.

For storm watchers along our coast, winds could be gusty all day Friday and into Saturday. Friday and Saturday will bring 15 foot swells, so if you’re at the coast this weekend, you may see the breakers higher than normal. A special weather statement was issued for this development. With high surf and choppy waters, be careful if walking along the beaches. It will be dangerous, so don’t turn your back on the Pacific! Of course, if the track of the big storm is closer to us, then waves would be greater. Rainfall would also be heavier, but the bulk of it will be to our north.

The weekend looks wetter now than we thought earlier in the week as a series of weather systems will ride along the jet stream and bring periods of rain with the modest amounts along the coast and to our north. Clark County will get some much-needed rainfall as well. Every drop counts right? It won’t be a complete washout but periods of rain.

The weather calms down after Monday and right now things are looking warm and dry by the middle of next week. I think I’ll head to the beach this weekend. I’ll report my observations of any action in Sunday’s column.
