Weather Eye: Plan indoor activities, because weekend will be rainy

How was your first day of May? Weather-wise, we had a brief break in the action with only scattered sprinkles here and there. April goes into the record books as a mild and dry month.

Despite the heavy showers the last few days, Vancouver officially tallied 2.01 inches, far short of the average of 2.93 inches. At least we made it to the 2-inch mark, right?

The average mean temperature was 1.2 degrees above normal with a broad range of temperatures. The warmest was 76 degrees on April 2 and 23, while the coolest temperature was 34 degrees on April 18. Neither temperatures were out of the ordinary or in record territory. Overall, April was a mixed bag and pleasant at times.

I mentioned the other day a huge area of low pressure swirling around in the Gulf of Alaska and sure enough another storm is brewing on the horizon. My eye is peeled to later Friday as a storm develops and drops southward and draws in plenty of moisture off the Pacific. Rain will be heavy in many areas, with the favored locations the coast and Cascades.

Streams may run high

Here in Clark County, I think it is possible to get at least an inch or more from later Friday through Saturday. Plan inside activities folks, it is going to be wet. Our wetter locations in the foothills could measure 2 or 3 inches before the sun sets on the weekend.

Speaking of the foothills, did you have a chance to look at them Wednesday? Plenty of new snow on Silver Star and down much lower. I do see freezing levels rising so there will be substantial melt-off and with the heavy rain, streams will be running high, draining the Cascades and the coastal mountains. I don’t expect any flooding issues, but our local roadways could have ponding at times so if driving, slow down. Nothing worse than hydroplaning in a vehicle.

If you planted seeds in the garden, they’ll get drenched and with an unsettled weather forecast all next week, the ground will not have much of a chance to dry out. Earlier there was some hope of a return to a warmer and drier pattern late next week but that will be placed on hold for now.

Take good care.
