Weather Eye: Enjoy sunny spring weather after long bout of rain

The well-advertised warm spell is underway today with afternoon temperatures cruising into the 80s for the first time this year. That will be good enough to make today about 15 degrees or better above normal. If you enjoy the warmer weather, hang on to your hat for Friday.

A strong high-pressure ridge will cause a heat low to develop right along the coast and force easterly winds through the Gorge at low levels. That and the warm air mass aloft will push our high to a new record on Friday at 90 degrees. It could inch up a degree or two above that in some locations.

Saturday will also be near 90 degrees, but I doubt there will be any record high here. Then on Mother’s Day, we see afternoon temperatures running in the pleasant 70s and topping off around 80 degrees. How is that for all the fine mothers out there? In my mind I envision some barbecues going on Sunday. Treat Mom well.

With the clearing skies late Tuesday, temperatures dropped well into the 30s around the county. Vancouver dipped to 37 degrees, but I had many reports of scattered frosts beyond the main urban areas. I doubt it was cold long enough to damage any tender plants that may have been left outdoors.

I know there is still a little snow on Silver Star to our east, but I would say it is safe to plant warm weather crops this Mother’s Day weekend. Gardeners will be in full force outdoors this weekend. Protect from sunburn!

The dry and sunny day on Wednesday was pleasant and curtailed our 13-day wet period which began on April 25th. Yep, 13 days straight with measurable rain and some of it was heavy. I received several reports from our loyal observers of torrential downpour over the past week or so. Everything will dry out quickly beginning today especially with that drift of east winds through the Gorge.

Weather statistics for Vancouver in the first seven days of the month show our average mean temperature is nearly four degrees below normal. Rainfall is over 1 1/2 inches for the month. No rain in sight for a while so we are still good.

Get outside and enjoy the fine spring weather and we will chat again on Saturday.
