Andrew Kabacy chased down just about everything Spencer Kang hit back to him.

In a championship tennis match, going all-out is expected and both players delivered Friday.

Kabacy, a sophomore at Skyview, outlasted Kang, a freshman at Camas, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (4) to claim the 4A District 4 singles title in a nearly 2 1/2-hour match at Club Green Meadows.

“I’m a scrappy player,” said Kabacy, the No. 1 seed who was the district runner-up last year. “I just had to get one more over than he did. Being quick helps.”

Momentum swung both directions in the third set. Kabacy running down a wide shot from Kang and then turning Kang’s return into a winner. Or Kang coming up with a well-timed service ace to recover from a 4-2 deficit and eventually tie the deciding set at 5-5.

“It was a lot of pressure,” Kabacy said. “And we both play differently under pressure.”

The doubles final also featured a variety of big shots in an all-Union affair.

In the end, it was juniors Andrew Chanthavong and Bjorn Morfin defeating teammates Alex Calpagiu and Quinn Lamey, both sophomores, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

“It’s tough playing teammates,” Chanthavong said. “It went both ways in practice.”

Union won the team title with 19 points, edging out Skyview (17).

The pressure only increases today as the District 4 finalists faceoff against KingCo’s No. 2 and 3s at Club Green Meadows for a berth to state in May.

One match, one winner to state from each of the four matches (two singles, two doubles) to be played starting at noon.
