A cooking fire thoroughly damaged a kitchen at a home across the street from the Washington School for the Deaf on Thursday afternoon, but firefighters were able to douse the flames before it spread beyond the stove and cabinets.

The renter living at the home reported the fire around 4:45 p.m. at 2814 East Sixth St. Vancouver Fire Department firefighter Pete Adams said crews arrived to find the kitchen ablaze.

They quickly brought a hose inside the house and had the fire out in about 5 minutes, he said.

The fire appeared to have started on the stove before spreading to some cabinets, but it didn’t make it to any drywall or out of the kitchen, Adams said.

He also said the woman will likely be able to stay in the house, if she chooses, just without much of a kitchen for now.

“The safety message, I guess, is we like to tell people to stay in the kitchen while frying food,” he said, adding that home cooks should be sure to keep a lid nearby.
