Local Angle: Governor praises Sen. Rivers
Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee praised local Republican Sen. Ann Rivers on Tuesday for working “collaboratively on behalf of (the) state’s 1 million schoolchildren.”
The state Senate passed a plan Tuesday to set up a task force that will study how to end the state’s reliance on local school levies and how to fully fund the state’s education system.
Many lawmakers, even those who voted in favor of the plan, admitted it didn’t go far enough.
Rivers said on the Senate floor that the measure is not perfect.
However, “We must not let a lack of perfection stop us from marching toward that perfection,” said Rivers, R-La Center.
Sen. Annette Cleveland, D-Vancouver, said she’s pleased people are still discussing how to meet the court’s mandate.
But she’s disappointed lawmakers won’t be finding a solution this year.
“So, after all of these years debating and negotiating and in an attempt to meet our McCleary obligation, we just passed ... a bill to create a task force to continue talking,” Cleveland said.
Over in the House, Rep. Paul Harris, R-Vancouver, who sits on the House Education Committee, said the Legislature still has to figure out how much local levy money is being spent on basic education.
“That definition has become critical ... And I think we’ll get that figured out next year and we will fund it,” Harris said.
