Clark County wrestlers feed off energy of Mat Classic

Loos, Rogers among 10 locals in state semifinals

TACOMA – The Mat Classic can make even someone named Loos feel a little tight.

Cameron Loos entered the state wrestling championships Friday as the favorite to win the Class 2A 220-pound title.

But with several thousand in attendance at the Tacoma Dome, even the returning second-place finisher wasn’t immune to some butterflies.

“My first match I was just getting the jitters out,” the senior said. “You look around, there’s so many people and the bright lights.”

Such is the power of the Mat Classic. But Loos is rather powerful too.

After slogging through a 5-3 first-round win over Michael Latimer of Sequim, Loos was unstoppable in his second match. He was never out of control in his 11-0 win over Isiac Anaya of Toppenish.

Now Loos is among 10 Clark County wrestlers whose state title dreams are alive heading into Saturday’s semifinals and finals.

There were no visible jitters for Battle Ground freshman James Rogers, who continued to wrestle above his age.

The 145-pounder beat two-time state champion Diego Castaneda 7-3. Rogers knocked the wind out of the Sunnyside senior when he slammed him late in the frenetic match.

Union also had a fast start Friday. All seven of its wrestlers won first-round matches.

That made for a fun afternoon break, which the Titans spent relaxing and watching television at their hotel.

“Our attitude coming into this next round was really positive,” Titan junior Tommy Strassenberg said. “We were all joking around in the car saying ‘let’s go do that again this next round.’”

Three Titans would advance to the semifinals. Strassenberg is alive in the 152-pound bracket while Ethan Rotondo and Vitaliy Manolov are both in the 106-pound semis.

Rotondo, the state’s top-ranked 106-pounder, was untouchable Friday. The junior outscored his first two opponents by a combined score of 33-0.

Will Taisacan’s journey to the semifinals wasn’t so easy. The 113-pound Mountain View senior won a gritty quarterfinal match 4-3 over South Kitsap’s Deion Anderson that left his mouth bloodied.

Taisacan is hoping for a shot in the finals against returning champ Derek Freitag, who beat him in the regional finals.

“I want a rematch against Freitag,” he said of the Kentridge senior. “On a scale of one to ten, it’s eleven.”

Top-ranked 285-pounder Dallas Goodpaster also prevailed in physically taxing quarterfinal match. The Evergreen senior beat a much larger wrestler in Lewis and Clarks senior Noah Buckley, 4-3.

Camas junior Dylan Ingram fed off Mat Classic’s energy. The 220-pounder pinned Noah Littlefield of Yelm, the advanced to the semis with a 3-0 win over Calhoun Helmberger of Curtis.

“It’s nerve-wracking all the way up until the match,” Ingram said. “Then you get out there and it’s just a normal match.”

Ridgefield junior Trevor Newburn advanced to the 126-pound semifinals. The returning second-place finisher beat Jake Freeman of Clarkston 7-5, then beat Jacobi Blankenship of Stielacoom 6-2.

Washougal junior Abby Lees in the only local girl in the semifinals. The returning state champion advanced to the 170-semifinals with a pair of pins.
