Weather Eye: Look forward to mostly dry weather the rest of this week, month

For once the weather followed the forecast, with light rain Sunday and lingering showers early Monday. Skies cleared and it was a great afternoon, with mostly sunny skies. Again, temperatures were seasonal; highs were in the low 50s.

High pressure will dominate all week, with dry weather forecast. A weak weather system will try to penetrate the high pressure on Wednesday. We may see some clouds, but any moisture would be well to our north and maybe along the coastal strip. The next threat of rain could be Friday night and early Saturday morning. And again late Sunday. We may be able to eke out some dry weather during the daylight hours over the weekend.

Did you see the full “snow” moon last evening? It was beautiful and meant to be seen casting its moonlight on a fresh bed of snow. Sorry, not here in our parts. The Wishram Tribe near Hood River, one dear to my heart in my fiction novel, called it the “Shoulder to Shoulder Around the Fire Moon.” I envision images of the tribe cuddled together in a circle around the campfire on a crisp February evening.

The mild weather we have had lately is inducing leaf and blossom buds on most trees. The spring-flowering trees are already showing their color here and there. Looks like an early spring as far as nature goes. The weather will cooperate this week as we enjoy afternoon temperatures into the low 60s.

Our monthly precipitation is 3.02 inches in Vancouver, close to normal. But with the drier weather the rest of the week and only light rain expected by the end of the month, we may end up below average in terms of monthly rainfall for a change.

And with signs of nature unfolding, I will leave you with this: “Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle … a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl. And the anticipation nurtures our dream.” — Barbara Winkler.
