Tim Martinez: A video is worth a thousand words

Here at The Columbian, we’re always looking for new ways to tell a story.

And you may have noticed this school year, we’ve been using video more and more as part of our high school sports coverage.

Sports editor Micah Rice made video a big part of his coverage of the Clark County Wrestling Championships. You can find footage and interviews from both the boys and girls tournaments at 360preps.com.

And we’ve noticed that you, the fans, also like to shoot video at high school events. Every time we here of a big play or an exciting finish, we’re confident that someone had the phone pointed at the action, and that video will find its way onto social media.

Knowing that, we have tried something new this week. We took video that our staffers have shot during the week and cut them together with videos that fans have shot to make a compilation of the best basketball highlights of the week.

We’ll look to post these highlight videos at the end of every week. So if you think you’ve got something good, send it to us.

Tweet us at @360preps.

We’re also on Instagram at 360preps and we’re on Facebook.

Or you could email us at sports@columbian.com.

And here’s one tip: When shooting video on your phone, hold your phone sideways. You’ll get a better shot that way.

Looking forward to seeing what you get.

Daily picks

MONDAY: It’s MLK Day, so there’s no school. But that doesn’t mean there is no prep action. Lower Columbia College in Longview is hosting the Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Tribute. It features a day of prep hoops including Columbia River boys vs. Wenatchee at 2 p.m. and Union boys vs. Grant of Portland at 8 p.m.

TUESDAY: The basketball doubleheaders in the 4A Greater St. Helens League flip their schedules this week, with the girls taking at 5:30 p.m. time slots and the boys following at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, the resurgent Camas boys play Evergreen at 7 p.m. in a matchup of teams trying to stay close to first-place Union.

WEDNESDAY: In boys swimming, the Evergreen Public Schools teams head to LaCamas Swim and Sport to compete against Camas and other teams in what should be a spirited meet.

THURSDAY: The fourth-ranked King’s Way Christian boys team could take a big step in wrapping up the Trico League title when the Knights travel to Kalama to take on the second-place Chinooks.

FRIDAY: It’s hard to do much worse than Union vs. Camas. This basketball doubleheader brings a pair of good matchups at Camas, starting with the girls game at 5:30 p.m.

SATURDAY: OK, here’s a geography lesson that doesn’t involve Union or Camas.

Heritage and Prairie both have rivals within their own school districts. Yet the schools that are closest to each other, for both Heritage and Prairie, are Heritage and Prairie, separated by just 2.5 miles.

Prairie’s next closest neighbor is also not in its school district. It’s Hockinson — five miles away. Hockinson is only six miles away from Heritage.

So that’s why the three schools will meet on the wrestling mat on Saturday for the Heritage Border Brawl.
