SEATTLE — A record number of young people have applied to attend the University of Washington in fall 2016. School officials say the biggest increase is in out-of-state applications.
The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/pyj4ue ) UW received 6,500 more applications by the December deadline than were sent in the previous fall. That’s a 16 percent increase, which school officials say is a record.
The numbers are so big that the college admissions office has hired six more temporary application readers to go through all 43,334 applications by March when acceptance letters go out.
Applications from Washington high-school seniors who want to be Huskies were only up 5 percent. Last year, the UW admitted about 65 percent of all in-state applicants, and Seegert says it’s likely this year’s admissions rate for residents will be similar.
