Letter: Replace Herrera Beutler in D.C.

We should ask ourselves what U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, and her party are doing to the people of Vancouver in the face of some pretty horrible potential calamities.

Responding to the very real possibility of a tar sands-fueled disaster, she asked her colleagues in Congress to train EMT and first responders rather than eliminate the threat by banning the terminal. The newest slogan of our representative and her party seems to be, “It’s the least we can do.”

The same applies to her party’s treatment of the Zika virus, an insidious disease that affects pregnant women and newborn babies. After stalling for months, her colleagues in the House and Senate announced a stripped-down funding project. In the spirit of “It’s the least we can do,” the GOP proudly trades money for our very safety.

While she may say she is bucking her party line on the Zika issue, the fact remains that we would be better protected by having a Democratic Party majority in the House which would provide full funding. We should be looking at alternatives to this unsafe representation and consider David McDevitt to replace Herrera Beutler in D.C. come November.

After all, it’s the least we can do for our safety.
