Letter: Progressivism has benefits

By Dick Lee, Ridgefield

A letter in the Oct. 2 Columbian urged us to vote intelligently and recognize progressivism as a crisis from 1912 to the present.

This prompted me to muse that if your children can no longer work in coal mines, thank a progressive. If you enjoy the benefits of Social Security, Medicare, and worked in a safe OSHA-inspected work environment, thank a progressive. If lead is no longer in paint, gasoline, water, or your toothpaste no longer comes from lead tubes, thank a progressive.

And in closing, the year 1912 holds special significance to me. That was the year Progressives stopped the Bayer Pharmaceutical Corporation from selling heroin as a cough suppressant for children.

“Crisis” of progressivism indeed.
