Weather Eye: Summer’s day in garden is a thing of beauty and peace

I enjoyed writing these words in July 2011 and share them with you on this fine summer day.

She goes intently along with her mission, exploring the undersides of expansive green bean leafs following the veins of the tender green structures, occasionally stumbling across an aphid enjoying its midafternoon nectar.

The sun is high in the sky and the heat is felt upon the top of the leaves as they twist and bend in the afternoon breezes. No worry about clouds and dampness this day, as summer shines down upon the garden. If one listens deeply, the faint rustlings of the cornstalks can be heard as they inch their way upwards. Honey bees gather deep tufts of pollen from the squash and pumpkin plants. Everything in the garden is at attention this summer day.

While humans engage in summertime pleasures, nature is busy preparing for yet another season not too far away. The green tomatoes on the vine soak in sunshine, hoping for more sunny days to bring the brilliant red hue. Delicate white cabbage moths flutter to and fro through the rows, stopping only to sun themselves for a few brief seconds.

The robins perch on the garden fence, eying the blueberries. Their bellies are already full from the early-morning earthly delights.

“A lazy day,” thinks the young lady out sunning on the gardenside patio. Sunglasses and water-mister handy, she too treasures the moment of exposure to summer.
