Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, has voted to keep President Trump’s taxes a secret. This is curious because the latest poll I could find was by Global Strategy Group. It found that 80 percent of Americans, with 64 percent of Republicans, wanted Trump to release his taxes. It certainly appears that Herrera Beutler believes she is elected by the party, not the people. There are times, however, when what seems obvious is not actually the case.
I think that we deserve an answer. Writing to Herrera Beutler only gets a form letter that is somewhat close to my concerns, telling me how hard she’s working for me. A follow-up letter, hoping for a real answer, doesn’t get a reply. A real town hall every five years is too long of a wait. Apparently the only people who think telephone town halls are a good idea are politicians and staff. This means that the best path to get an answer from our elusive representative is a letter to the editor. I’d like to ask her: What are we missing? Why is it so important to keep Trump’s taxes a secret?
