A fire in a Bagley Downs apartment unit Saturday afternoon displaced its occupants and caused about $75,000 worth of damage.

The fire on the back porch of a second-floor apartment unit at 3300 N.E. 57th Ave. was reported at about 2:30 p.m.

“It appears to have been caused by smoking,” said Rick Steele, Vancouver Fire Department battalion chief. “It went up the wall and into the attic. It heavily damaged one unit, and there was a little water damage to the unit below.”

Nineteen firefighters responded to the blaze, with five engines and a ladder truck.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $50,000, with $25,000 in damage to the unit’s contents.

The American Red Cross said it assisted four adults, two children and their pets who were affected by the fire.
