A fire at 2723 N.W. Maplewood Dr. killed a pet dog, destroyed a garage and damaged a house Thursday evening.

Three units from Clark County Fire District 6 responded at 5:25 p.m. with assistance from the Vancouver Fire Department.

“When we arrived, it was burning with visible flames,” District 6 spokesman David Shmitke said.

The fire was discovered by passersby who heard a dog barking and noticed smoke coming out of the ranch-style house’s attached garage.

The cause of the fire is unclear. No one was home when the fire happened, but the dog was killed.

The garage was a total loss, and the house was uninhabitable due to smoke damage, Shmitke said.

According to the Red Cross, two adults and one child were displaced. The organization helped connect the family with lodging and other post-disaster needs.
