Patrons of LA Fitness’ Hazel Dell location can finally celebrate the long-awaited reopening of the gym’s pool. Staff at the facility confirmed the pool reopened Tuesday.

However, the pool at LA Fitness’ Orchards location remains closed.

Clark County Public Health closed the pools in 2023 due to “imminent health hazards.” The closure notice for the pool at the Orchards location at 11505 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd. was issued Feb. 16, 2023. The closure notice for the pool at the Hazel Dell location at 7607 N.E. Fifth Ave. was issued Sept. 1, 2023.

“Both pools were closed due to facility HVAC systems not providing adequate ventilation, which had caused mold accumulation, peeling paint, damaged drywall, and rust and corrosion on metal surfaces,” Marissa Armstrong, a spokeswoman for Public Health, said in a February interview.

Armstrong confirmed Friday that Public Health has approved the Hazel Dell pool reopening but work is still ongoing at the Orchards location.

“Reopening of the pool at the Orchards location is dependent on when the required HVAC and facility repairs are completed, and when those repairs have been reviewed and approved by Public Health’s Recreational Water Safety team during a reopening inspection,” Armstrong said in an email to The Columbian. “To date, we have not received a request for a reopening inspection and do not have a timeline for when that may occur.”

For the Hazel Dell location, Armstrong said the required repairs were confirmed through an onsite inspection, review of work orders and invoices for equipment repairs and replacements, and a discussion with the facility’s HVAC manager.

“The facility is also keeping a temperature and humidity monitor on the pool deck,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong said LA Fitness was not fined for public safety issues but did have to pay a $400 reopening inspection fee after repairs were completed.

Public Health will conduct follow-up inspections at each location.

No timeline for the Orchards repairs was available.
