Letter: Time to discuss gun violence

Thank you for your excellent editorial “In Our View — What About Guns?” on Sept. 20. We are the only western country that has such an obsession about guns.

My spouse is originally from the U.K., and he has a really hard time understanding our gun culture. To stop these mass shootings, we need to have a serious discussion about preventing gun violence while still allowing responsible gun owners to keep their guns. It is so frustrating that we cannot research gun violence. The number of gun deaths in the U.S. is staggering, compared to in other countries.

Why do gun owners feel so threatened that their guns will be taken away anytime discussion on gun violence is started? I appreciate The Columbian’s view on this issue. I hope that honest discussions can start and our country can change this culture in my lifetime.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
