Letter: Follow the money, not the hype

I had to laugh at the letter “Liberals demonstrate hypocrisy,” published April 19 in The Columbian. Focusing on the past antics of some prominent Democrats obfuscates or ignores the real issue with President Trump’s activity. That is, whether or not the payment of $130,000 amounted to an illegal campaign contribution.

No one, outside the thrill-seeking populace and his own family, really cares who Trump is schtupping. While such actions are despicable, whether or not Democrats have adulterers in their history is irrelevant, as are the past antics of prominent Republicans.

It doesn’t matter that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s antics made President Bill Clinton look like a choir boy, or demonstrated the ultimate hypocrisy when driving for Clinton’s impeachment. And let’s not forget that morals change. In President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s day, committing adultery was far more acceptable than divorce. In any event, we the people would be further ahead to follow the money, not the hype.
