The Oregon Department of Transportation says Interstate 84 in Portland between two major freeways will be closed to traffic in both directions starting Friday at 11 p.m.

Oregon DOT said I-84 will close between Interstates 5 and 205. All lanes are scheduled to reopen by 6 a.m. Saturday.

Single-lane and some ramp closures will begin as early as 8 p.m. Friday, the transportation department said.

The department plans to install new signs in hopes of improving safety on the road. One is being installed west of I-205 while another will be placed at Northeast 57th Avenue. A third sign will be installed at a later date, the transportation department said.

Officials warned drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes.
