NORTH BEND — The King County Sheriff’s Office says a teenage boy died after falling several hundred feet at Rattlesnake Ledge in North Bend, Washington.

KOMO-TV reports that King County deputies said the 16-year-old was hiking with his four friends when he lost his footing on icy terrain and fell 600 feet to his death on Saturday morning.

Officials say the family identified the teen as Eddie Petrik of Des Moines.

When the rescue call came in, 38 members from the volunteer King County Search and Rescue team were about 100 yards away doing a training, so they responded quickly.

Still, they couldn’t save the teen boy.

Crews closed the trail for several hours while first responders recovered the victim’s body.
